3.4 Model skills and behaviors with children and other adults.

  1. adult and child drawingAdults can model writing for children. Start by inviting the child to dictate stories about his artwork and then end by having the adult write the dictation as the child watches.
  2. Model friendship skills by asking a child to help you get the markers and then thank the child for being helpful.
  3. teacher drawing before a groupSmall and large group time is a great opportunity to model writing for children. This teacher writes the word and draws the picture related to the topic they are talking about in large group. By using the large board, all of the children are able to watch the teacher model writing.
  4. In large group, model "being a friend" as you work with your co-teacher or as children are your helpers. Use social conventions (please, thank you) and emotion words ("that makes me happy").
  5. Build celebrations of friendship into your daily routines. Watch how this teacher uses an embedded activity called "Superfriends" to acknowledge positive social emotional behavior.
